The Board of Directors of Sheltering Hands, Inc. meet on a regular basis (usually monthly) at the Tuxe Center at our new Headquarters on Highway 27. All members and other interested citizens are welcome to attend. The meeting begins at 5:00. Most meetings are on a Friday and are posted in the events calendar section. Below you will find a listing and brief biographical information on our Board members. All Board members share a deep love for animals, especially cats, and work on various committees throughout the year.
Board of Directors (in alphabetical order)
Gina Camilleri – Education Director:
Gina is a Florida native who has lived in Marion County for 46 years. She received both her BA and M.Ed in Elementary Education from the University of Florida. Gina was an educator in Marion County for 35 years. For the last 13 years of her career, she co-founded and directed Marion County’s first charter school. Gina retired in 2013. She has one son who works as a fashion designer in New York. In retirement, Gina is able to devote more time to her lifelong passions of animal and environmental advocacy. Her special feline passions are the senior and “other abled” cats.
Dr. Kat Fleck – Treasurer/ Community Cat Program Medical Director:
As medical supervisor for the organization Dr Fleck utilizes her 35 years of experience in veterinary medicine and a life long love of cats. A Purdue graduate she and her husband (and 17 cats) relocated to Florida in 2001. Besides acting as treasurer and medical director for the TNR program, Dr Fleck is a foster parent for cats and kittens needing special attention prior to going to adoption or life residence facilities.
Dr. Susie Fromm – Director at Large:
Dr. Fromm graduated from the University of Florida School of Veterinary Medicine. She has owned and operated a small-animal house-call practice in Ocala since 1994.
Leslie Hinson- Vice-President
Debbie Wabbersen – President:
Debbie has been a member of Sheltering Hands since the organization’s inception. Debbie’s home serves as a resident facility for several non-adoptable cats, as well as a foster home for adoptable cats and kittens. Debbie serves as a TNR volunteer, and is a caregiver for several colonies. She assists with caring for the cats and kittens available for adoption at Petsmart, and has previously served as the organization’s Foster Director. Debbie is a police officer with the city of Ocala, and earned her certification as a Certified Humane Animal Investigator through the University of Missouri, Columbia.
Molly Wege- Secretary:
Molly is a native Floridian. She grew up in North Miami and slowly migrated north, via Hollywood, Southwest Ranches and ultimately to Morriston, Florida, where she and her family have lived since 2006 with 5 horses, a bunch of cats and 2 dogs. Molly is dedicated to the cause of spay and neuter since she was 15 and has spent time as a volunteer with Broward County Humane Society, and as a TNR Coordinator for Abandoned Pet Rescue in Broward County. Currently, Molly works TNR for residents in her area that need assistance.
All persons planning to speak on a specific motion before the Board have the right, through the Chair, to have their comments heard. When an action item is before the Board and a motion and second have been made for further discussion, the public will speak first and then the Board of Sheltering Hands will conduct their discussion and take action. All persons presenting written materials for consideration must provide a copy to the Secretary for inclusion in the official minutes.
